1940 US Census Records Released

Recommended Posts

The 1940 US Census was released online this morning and demand has totally overwhelmed the official Archives.gov website as well as the commercial Archives.com website. See this USA Today article for more information about the websites being down. According to this article from The Christian Science Monitor, a name index will not be available to search immediately. There is also some discussion of privacy concerns relating to the release of census information on 20 million people who are still alive.

Once the websites become available again, is anyone going to try searching for their family members (living and dead)? My past attempts to find census information on family members has resulted in frustration and little else. The fact that you can only search by location or "Enumeration District" makes it difficult if not impossible to search for specific people.

Alas, most of my family was in District 13.
