Delayed Registration?

Recommended Posts

I know I pick odd times to poke my head into the OL, but is it a wise move to make potential new users wait to be accepted? My fear is that the OL hasn't been generating that much traffic to begin with and to make potential new users wait would just make them not come back. Wouldn't a word verification system be more practical? It would be rather trivial to implement and people could interact immediately after joining. Just my $0.02. :lol-bounce:

For your information, we do have a 'word verification' system, but the spam-bots still get past it.

Some also get past the email check.

If you know of some way of guaranteeing that the real decent people register and the waste of times don't, without manual intervention, I'd love to hear it.

Ok, now I'm a bit confused. Has the board been having problems with spam bots?

I checked out the boards verification system... it looks pretty simple to bypass. Simply upgrading that section of the code with a better system should do it. (I can recommend GPL versions that are pretty easy to install). Now if there's a person entering in the code, then you're SOL no matter what you do. Delaying registration or word verification or even browser detection schemes won't stop spammers.

Which is the way it is increasingly becoming as they use the equivalent of 3rd World sweat shop children registering to promote their crap.

Yes. We've had a spate of porn and other links posted by 'members' who got past the board so-called security. The people who design the software to do the spamming are very proud of this feature of their product, and happily advertise it.

Along with all boards, we saw a massive upsurge in attempted registrations from last November, peaking at 16 a day until I got totally fed up with acting retroactively and added myself into the registration procedure. Since then, They Have Not Passed, and yes, we have had some new members.

From what I gather from other boards, we get off lightly. Low traffic attracts less attention, I suppose.
